Paul Dano switched from acting to co-writing and directing for the new drama Wildlife, which played to good notices at Sundance and, following a further festival run, is now headed to screens in the US and here. Featuring Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal as the leads, check out the latest trailer...
With Zoe Kazan sharing scripting duties on a film based on Richard Ford's eponymous novel, Wildlife finds Mulligan as Jeanette, the lynchpin of a 1960s nuclear family set to detonate in small town Montana.
Jerry (Gyllenhaal), her husband, is a golf pro who suddenly loses his job. With his spirit crushed and his ego bruised, he throws himself into helping fight the giant forest fire raging nearby, leaving Jeanette and son Joe (Ed Oxenbould) to cope, and forcing Joe to grow up more quickly than he might.
A period drama with a challenging story might sound like a tough nut to crack as your first film, but Dano has seemingly pulled it off. It'll be screened at the London Film Festival on 13 October ahead of a limited release in the States (starting 19 October) before arriving in the UK on 9 November.
