It’s a matter of months until Captain Marvel blasts into the MCU in her solo movie, kindly introducing herself before hopefully delivering the ultimate smackdown against Thanos a few weeks later in Avengers: Endgame. The arrival of Brie Larson’s ultra-powerful heroine will not only take the Marvel universe back to the 1990s, but introduce a whole new cosmic conflict – the ongoing war between two alien races, the blue-skinned Kree and the green shape-shifting Skrulls. Cap finds herself batting for the former under the instruction of military unit Starforce, while the latter use their abilities to infiltrate the galaxy.

For the upcoming Captain Marvel issue of Empire, hitting newsstands on Thursday 24 January, we went on set of the film to get the inside stoy – and we’ve got two exclusive images to share with you before the magazine arrives. First up, here’s a close-up look at the Skrulls – chiefly, Ben Mendelsohn in full make-up as their fearsome leader Talos.

It marks the actor’s reunion with directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, after leading their 2015 drama Mississippi Grind. “They were asking me to do some stuff with this Skrull guy that was going to be fun and interesting,” he tells Empire. “It’s different, but it’s the same. It’s just an actor and a camera.”

And here’s another exclusive image showing Jude Law’s mysterious Starforce leader in action, alongside Rune Temte’s Kree warrior Bron-Char.
