Little Woods director Nia DaCosta has seen her career really take off in the last couple of years, taking work on Top Boy and the upcoming new version of Candyman. She's just landed her biggest gig yet, as, according to Deadline, she's Marvel's chosen filmmaker for Captain Marvel 2.
With Brie Larson back as the titular superhero – AKA human fighter pilot Carol Danvers, who gains her powers from an explosion of a Kree engine fitted to the plane she'd been flying – and WandaVision's Megan McDonnell wrote the script for the follow-up. DaCosta takes over from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who handled the first film, which earned $1.13 billion worldwide.
This continues Marvel's push to hire directors from out of the giant blockbuster realm, and is also a healthy step on the road to real diversity among its behind-the-camera talent. Plus, DaCosta is no token hire: she's a proven filmmaker who should have no trouble making the leap to superhero cinema.
DaCosta's take on Candyman is currently a targeting a 16 October release date this year.
