Though it faced some competition from Jodie Foster's latest directorial gig Money Monster, Captain America: Civil War handily saw off all comers and snagged the top spot at the US box office once again, earning $72.5 million according to studio estimates.
That represents a 59% drop from its initial weekend, but Civil War is still doing huge business, pushing past $295.8 million in the States alone and quickly heading for the $1 billion point worldwide. With $940 million globally, it won't be long... It currently sits seventh on the charts in terms of Marvel's own movies in purely domestic terms, but had its eye on the first two Iron Man films and should have overtaken both them and Guardians Of The Galaxy before too long.
Keeping the smiles on Disney executives' faces, The Jungle Book stayed second place despite five weeks in the charts, earning an additional $17.7 million. The movie has earned more than $311 in America and $828 million globally. Money Monster, which stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney, charted third on its opening, taking in a healthy $15 million, and proving that mid-budget range movies can still succeed at the box office with a little luck and some star power to help boost things. That put it ahead of new horror thriller The Darkness, which launched in fourth with $5.1 million.
Mother's Day, which is holding on stronger than we might have expected given the reviews, slipped to fifth on $3.2 million. Zootopia held in sixth place, taking in $2.8 million and boosting its US total to $331.8 million.
The Huntsman: Winter's War fell to seventh on $2.5 million, while cat action comedy Keanu dropped to eighth place and $1.9 million. At ninth we find Barbershop: The Next Cut bringing in $1.6 million, while Melissa McCarthy's comedy The Boss added $1.1 million for a $61.1 million US total to date with a variety of overseas openings (including here in the UK) still to come.
