Sooner or later, someone gets the bright idea to turn any film, no matter how tangentially featuring music, into a stage musical. Almost Famous, Cameron Crowe's Oscar-winning tale of life as a young journalist on tour with a rock band feels like a more natural fit than some, and the writer/director is part of the team bringing the potential show to life.
Wolf Hall's Jeremy Herrin is on to direct the show, with Lia Vollack, Joey Parnes, Sue Wagner and John Johnson as producers. Crowe will write the book for the musical and co-write the lyrics with Next To Normal Tony winner Tom Kitt, who will also oversee the new, original score.
What elements of the film – which starred Patrick Fugit as a Crowe surrogate experiencing life, unrequited love and band arguments on the road with nascent rock group Stillwater for Rolling Stone magazine – will make it in we can't say, but we'd expect to hear at least one or two new songs from the group make it in.
