Cameron Crowe Talks Say Anything Sequel

Cameron Crowe is not a man known for his sequels. His output has been strictly original (not counting Vanilla’s Sky’s status as a remake of Open Your Eyes). But when he sat down with the press on Saturday at the biannual Television Critics tour to discuss his new documentary Pearl Jam Twenty, he did admit that he’d had thoughts across the years that he might continue the story of one of his best movies – **Say Anything…

As you’ll likely know, the 1989 film saw John Cusack as noble underachiever and outspoken high school senior Lloyd Dobler, who meets and woos the brainy and beautiful Diane Court (Ione Skye). They don’t seem like the perfect couple, and Diane’s father (John Mahoney) definitely doesn’t want them together, but Lloyd has a particular brand of charm that makes him all the more loveable…

"Say Anything... is the only thing that I've written that I would consider doing that with," said Crowe, when asked about the idea. "And I've thought about it from time to time, and talked about it with John Cusack once. This is the only story that I've thought there might be another chapter to that at some point."

Of course, it’s highly unlikely that anything will ever actually happen, and Crowe is busy anyway between the Pearl Jam piece, Elton John documentary The Union and putting the finishing touches to his new movie We Bought a Zoo, which will arrive on December 23.
