Saoirse Ronan was rightly lauded for her lead role in Greta Gerwig’s wonderful comedy-drama Lady Bird — but she wasn’t the only member of its young cast to make an impression. Beanie Feldstein was equally believable and engrossing as Lady Bird’s best friend Julie, and now she’s about to take the lead role in another coming-of-age story: How To Build A Girl.
Production has just begun on the film, which sees Caitlin Moran adapt her own fictional debut with British director Coky Giedroyc behind the camera. Here’s the official synopsis: “It’s 1993, and there’s only one way for a fat, bright, funny, working-class sixteen year old (Beanie Feldstein) to break out of her tiny, crowded house in Wolverhampton, and go on the somehow noble sex-quest she desires - to reinvent herself as swashbuckling, top-hat-wearing rock critic Dolly Wilde, and explode all over London. The only question is — was Dolly Wilde the right girl to build?”
Aside from Feldstein the cast includes Paddy Considine and Sarah Solemani as Dolly’s parents, as well as the likes of Game of Thrones’ Alfie Allen, Joanna Scanlan, and Fear the Walking Dead star Frank Dillane. There’s no release date yet, but the shoot has begun and will continue through July and August.
