In the realm of twisted fairy tales, there are few imaginings more fractured and disturbing than American McGee's Alice. A long way from Lewis Carroll's colourful world, Alice, is a demented interpretation of the classic children's story and Sarah Michelle Gellar has been lined up for the title role. Based on the 2000 computer game, Alice picks up ten years after our heroine's first encounter with the Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter et al and things have not gone well. She's spent time in an asylum (her tales of talking rabbits having not gone down well with the NHS), her home has been destroyed and her entire family killed. Returning to the world of Wonderland she soon discovers that it has faired little better, becoming a dark and sinister image of the world we all remember. Truth be told, Wonderland was never that pleasant to begin with - its denizens listing drug abuse and wanton decapitation among their flaws - but McGee's vision makes all that look positively idyllic by comparison. Luckily for Gellar, stepping into this weirdy world, the new Alice is no pushover either. Sporting DM boots, a skull-embossed hair ribbon and a rather keen carving knife, our dainty heroine is more than equipped to deal with whatever Wonderland may throw at her. No news on when production will start but the film will be directed by Marcus Nispel, who was responsible for the recent remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (and, interestingly, the Cher video for Walking in Memphis).
