Taking a leaf out of DC and Marvel's books, the Fox-based X-Men universe is expanding to TV with Legion, overseen by Fargo's Noah Hawley. Now Bryan Singer, one of the main men behind the big screen mutant instalments (and an executive producer of the series), says the TV show will relate to future movies.

Legion focuses on Dan Stevens' David Haller, who, from his teenage years, has had to deal with mental illness. In and out of hospitals over the years with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, he comes to realize that the visions he experiences and the voices in his head might actually be real. This, naturally, leads to adventures of the meta kind, though not necessarily via traditional superhero tropes.

Talking at the Edinburgh TV festival (as covered by The Hollywood Reporter), Singer was careful to clarify that the series will have its own identity as "part of the X-Men universe, but when you watched it, you wouldn't have to label it, it could exist completely on its own." Still, it and an as-yet untitled another planned X-Men series "will relate to future X-Men movies." And he added it would feature a “really ambitious and fun and very unique storyline.”

The small-screen mutant activity will be the focus for the near future, as Singer is busy developing other projects, including a new 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Legion should be on screens next year, though no firm date has been announced.
