She scored her latest Oscar nomination for novel adaptation Brooklyn, and Saoirse Ronan is lining up another film based on a book for a future project. She's on board to star in On Chesil Beach, drawn from the Ian McEwan novel.
The story, which McEwan has himself adapted, chronicles the issues of a newly married couple in the 1962 as they figure out their fears, fumbles and fights when it comes to consummation. Florence (the character Ronan will play) is quietly terrified to voice her concerns about her wedding night to Edward, who is himself worried about his lack of experience with women.
Sam Mendes had considered directing the film for a while, and even talked to Carey Mulligan about starring, but now Carol producers Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen have The Hollow Crown's Dominic Cooke attached to make his film debut with it. And they have form with Ronan, having produced vampire tale Byzantium. The cameras should be rolling this autumn.
