The Golden Globes, one of the film industry's main indicators of who will win the Oscars, today announced the shortlist for the 58th Golden Globe Awards which will take place on 21 January 2001. While it wasn't exactly a bumper year for British talent, a respectable mixture of actors, director and musicians scooped up 11 nominations - including two of the most important, Best Drama and Best Director (Billy Elliot and Ridley Scott respectively). Other nominations for the British include Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical (Brenda Blethyn and Tracy Ullman), Best Supporting Actor (Albert Finney), Best Musical or Comedy (Chicken Run), Best Composer (Rachel Portman for Chocolat) and Best Original Song (Sting for The Emperor's New Groove). The greatest number of nominations came in the Best Supporting Actress category where Judi Dench, Julie Walters and Catherine Zeta-Jones nabbed three of a possible five nomations.
