Currently following a huge ape around with her camera in Skull Island and soon be seen wielding a firearm in Ben Wheatley's Free Fire, Brie Larson is used to playing characters that can go up against the very best of men. It seems only right, then, that the actress has chosen to portray Victoria Woodhull – the first female US presidential candidate at a time when women didn’t even have the vote.
Written by Ben Kopit (the upcoming The Libertine for Brett Ratner), Larson will both produce and star in Victoria Woodhull for Amazon Studios. Though we know Woodhull didn’t win (as previously mentioned, women didn’t even have the vote for another 40+ years), she was a vital figure in the battle for women’s suffrage during her 1872 campaign.
Manchester By The Sea’s Best Picture nomination at this year’s Oscars made Amazon the first streaming site to crack the ceremony’s top category. Will Oscar winner Larson and Amazon Studios have the same luck again? We'll have to wait and see.
For the time being, the actress has a very busy schedule, with two Marvel films on her plate (Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel), as well as The Glass Castle from Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton. She also has directorial debut, Unicorn Store – starring Samuel L. Jackson, Bradley Whitford, Joan Cusack, Hamish Linklater, and herself – slated for release later this year.
