Breaking Dawn Still US Box Office Champ

It’s traditional for filmgoing across the pond to slow down a little once the Thanksgiving holiday is over and before the Christmas break hits. But this week at the US box office was a painfully sluggish one, with no new wide releases and little sign of a business boost for anything already in the charts.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn** – Part **1 clung on to its position at the top, dragging in $16.9 million. That meant it stayed ahead of Kermit and co, with The Muppets making $11.2 million in its second week. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo expanded to more screens and swapped places with Arthur Christmas and Happy Feet Two, jumping to third and $7.6 million. Arthur stayed where it was in fourth and added $7.3 million to its Chrimbo coffers. And the penguin sequel dropped, earning just $6 million this week. With $51.5 million in the bank so far, it’s a long way from profitability and Warners will be hoping the international box office helps out.

Adam Sandler’s Jack And Jill lingered in sixth place with $5.5 million, while The Descendants pulled a Hugo and added cinemas, jumping up to seventh with $5.2 million. Immortals was down to eighth with $4.3 million and Tower Heist lifted to ninth, taking $4.1 million. Finally, rounding out the top 10 we have Puss In Boots with $3 million.
