The first trailer for James Gray’s upcoming sci-fi Ad Astra didn’t necessarily look much like a James Gray film – the director who previously gave us The Lost City Of Z and We Own The Night. But now the second trailer has arrived, teasing a more contemplative, cerebral, but no less thrilling side of the film. This one stars Brad Pitt as Major Roy McBride, the son of Tommy Lee Jones’ Clifford McBride – an astronaut who went missing on a mission. In search of answers, Roy heads off on his own interstellar voyage. Watch the new trailer:
With a stirring string score, some gorgeous cinematography, and plenty of arresting images – shots of the Earth in turmoil, lunar skirmishes, and neon signs in seemingly space-bound civilisations – this seems like a much more promising look at Gray’s long-awaited next film. He’s got a top cast on board too, with Liv Tyler, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland and more joining Pitt and Jones. Could we have another grown-up instant sci-fi classic in the vein of Interstellar, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 on our hands?
We’ll find out when the film hits UK cinemas on 18 September.
