We watched him grow up on screen in Boyhood, and now Ellar Coltrane has landed his first role since the Oscar-winning drama. He’s signed on to the cast of tech thriller **The Circle{ =nofollow}.

Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Bill Paxton, Nate Corddry and fellow new cast arrival Patton Oswalt are all part of the pic, which director James Ponsoldt adapted from Dave Eggers’ 2013 novel.

The story follows a young woman (Watson) hired to work for the titular internet megacorp, which already boasts Hanks and Boyega (as the visionary behind the driving idea) among its ranks The concept behind the company is uniting users' email, social media, banking and online shopping in its universal operating system as one identity, with this leading to a new age of transparency and civility. Of course, it’s not that simple – and the story becomes a thriller that exploits the dangers of a digital life where all personal data is collected and pervasive surveillance means that privacy is a thing of the past.

Coltrane is aboard to play Watson’s ex-boyfriend, who rejects the idea of the tech and makes an effort to go off the grid. Ponsoldt is cranking the cameras now and The Circle should be in cinemas next year, though no concrete release date is on the books yet.
