There are plenty of Christmas movies out there – but never really any about the much-underrated Boxing Day (think leftovers from Christmas dinner, all your new presents to play with, and none of the pressure of the main event). Enter Boxing Day, the directorial debut of Kidulthood and Yardie star Aml Ameen – a winter rom-com ticking all the boxes in terms of festive feels; there’s comedy, romance, heartbreak and all the joy and awkwardness of getting the family together around the turkey. Check out the brand new trailer here:
As well as co-writing, directing and producing, Ameen stars as Melvin, a famous British author living Stateside. After a grand proposal to his American girlfriend Lisa (Aja Naomi King) doesn’t quite go as expected, the couple head to London for a stint on Melvin’s latest book tour – and for Lisa to finally meet his family. Chaos ensues as Melvin’s family are introduced, and the romance gets complicated when they run into Melvin’s ex, Georgia, now a super famous popstar (played by Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock in her first film role). The core love triangle is backed up by a brilliant supporting cast, including Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Small Axe’s Sheyi Cole and Game of Thrones’ Stephen Dillane.
Boxing Day arrives in UK cinemas on December 3rd - and keep an eye on empireonline.com for a trailer breakdown with Aml Ameen, coming very soon.
