Hollywood studios don’t give up on successful franchises, so it comes as no surprise that there are plans afoot to extend the Jason Bourne franchise beyond the three books in Robert Ludlum’s series.
The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy, which follow amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), have taken in excess of $500million worldwide and were two of the best Bond films 007 never made. The third in the series, The Bourne Ultimatum, is set to start shooting on August 1, with Paul Greengrass again calling the shots. Bourne producer Frank Marshall told MTV that the series may stretch to “maybe five films…At some point he’s gotta find out who he is”. But ultimately the decision is “up to Matt Damon”. Writers are currently working on potential plotlines.
If the third film follows the book it will see Bourne form an uneasy alliance with the KGB after being targeted by an aging terrorist. Marshall stated that the film will bring Julia Stiles and Joan Allen’s characters into more central roles.
