If it feels like we've been waiting ages to actually see something from Borderlands – adapting the wildly popular video game series, and that's because it's been trundling through development for years – and, while Eli Roth directed the main shoot, Deadpool's Tim Miller handled some more recent re-shoots. And with the first trailer now online, we can see the results of all that work, with Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black and Ariana Greenblatt front and centre. Take a look:
Borderlands follows Blanchett Lilith, a notorious outlaw and fortune-seeker who heads back to her home planet of Pandora (a place she was only too happy to leave in the first place) on a mission to track down the missing daughter of the wealthy and evil Atlas (Edgar Ramirez).
It doesn't hurt that the planet also boasts a reportedly huge treasure lurking with in vault, so Lilith gathers a team to help her on this dual endeavor: Roland (Hart), a former elite mercenary looking for some redemption, Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a violent pre-teen demolitionist, her musclebound guardian Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tannis (Curtis), a scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity, and Claptrap (Black), a wise-cracking robot who can apparently be shot multiple times and, er, wee the bullets out.
There is a definite feel of someone pointing to Guardians Of The Galaxy and asking for something like that, with the game's basic set up and team dynamic fitting the bill. Will Lilith and co. reach the pop cultural impact of Rocket Raccoon and the gang? We'll find out when Borderlands is released on 9 August.
