Happy Death Day

With its murderous take on the Groundhog Day concept, it’s only fitting that Blumhouse wants to do Happy Death Day all over again. The primarily horror-focused production company is planning a follow-up to the supernatural slasher, and it’s been give a playful official title. In an equally groan-worthy and and chuckle-inducing move, the second film will be called Happy Death Day 2U – certainly one to rival Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again and Piranha 3DD in its dumb brilliance.

In a nifty bit of counter-programming, Happy Death Day 2U (we’e never going to be bored of that title) is coming to cinemas on Valentine’s Day in 2019 – an ideal date movie for anyone not into smushy romcoms. The film is once again produced by Jason Blum, with writer-director Christopher Landon back behind the camera. SPOILER WARNING With Jessica Rothe’s heroine Tree (yes, that’s the character’s actual name) managing to survive the last film, where she was stuck re-living her birthday over and over while repeatedly being offed by baby-masked knife-wielders, she’s back for this one as well. Can she really be so unlucky as to get stuck in another blood-soaked time-loop?

The first Happy Death Day proved a big hit for Blumhouse, whose tiny-budget meets high-concept horror approach saw a $122 million worldwide box office return from a measly $4.8 million budget. The start of 2019 will make a productive release period for Jason Blum’s horror house, with M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable and Split sequel Glass arriving in January, and Jordan Peele’s Get Out follow-up Us coming in March.
