He's been one of the most sought-after directors since the likes of Sicario and Arrival, and he's garnering early praise for Blade Runner 2049. Now Denis Villeneuve could be taking on his biggest challenge yet: wrangling Sony's long-gestating Cleopatra movie.
Aiming to adapt Stacy Schiff's biography Cleopatra: A Life, the film about the Egyptian queen has been in the works for years, with Angelina considering the lead role and filmmakers such as James Cameron, David Fincher and Paul Greengrass all becoming attached before leaving the movie. The script, meanwhile, has seen work from Eric Roth, Brian Helgeland and David Scarpa, but if he signs on, Villeneuve will be re-developing the idea.
Villeneuve has proved time and again that he is up for a big challenge – following Blade Runner alone was a tough gig, but Cleopatra has defeated many before him. We wouldn't bet against him, even with that. Before that, he's also looking to make a new take on Dune.
