With cinemas reopening in a big way, there have been some hefty successes at the box office for the first time in well over a year – including the likes of A Quiet Place Part II and Fast & Furious 9. But all eyes were on the return of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to see how Black Widow would perform, opening more than a year after it was originally planned. As it turns out, Disney and Marvel didn't need to worry (much). The standalone film has already earned more than $215 million globally.

That was fed by a huge $80 million in the States and $78 million from 46 countries elsewhere in the world (including here in the UK, where the movie opened on Wednesday). Unusually, Disney also released details of the film's performance on Disney+, where it was available for the additional Premier Access charge. All in, the film took more than $60 million on the streaming service alone, bringing its total tally so far to $218 million. The film's Stateside opening was in line with fellow solo MCU stablemates such as Ant-Man – though if this is technically Black Widow’s solo debut, the character has been known by MCU fans for a decade at this point.

Elsewhere, Universal still has reason to feel happy, with Fast 9 continuing to earn, followed by The Boss Baby sequel and The Forever Purge.
