Disney won't exactly be losing sleep over the results – since the company owns both films – but Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle In Time had to make do with a second place launch at the American box office, as Black Panther stayed in the top spot. The superhero smash hit earned $41.1 million, according to studio estimates.

And there's something to be said for the top two films in the Stateside charts being directed by people of colour, so while Wrinkle might not have been quite the smash the company might have hoped for (it opened to $33.3 million), it's still a win for the Mouse House. As for Black Panther, the movie has now joined the billion-dollar club, crossing 1.07 billion thank to its worldwide earnings. The records keep falling for the king of Wakanda.

Third was new horror release The Strangers: Prey At Night, which made $10.4 million. Red Sparrow was shoved down to fourth, earning $8.1 million. Game Night slipped one place to fifth, scoring $7.9 million.

At sixth, Peter Rabbit hopped away with $6.8 million, while the Death Wish remake took $6.6 million at seventh. Rob Cohen's new action thriller The Hurricane Heist, launched in eighth place, making $3.1 million.

Annihilation fell to ninth, making a similar $3.1 million. Finally, at 10th, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle clung to a chart place despite starting to arrive on home entertainment formats. The entertaining comedy adventure prepared to leave the top 10 with $2.7 million this week and a $397.2 million domestic total.
