Who’s ready for more doses of tech-fuelled feel-bad drama? The fifth season of Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker’s bleak-but-brilliant anthology series, has been in production this year – and it sounds like it could arrive before the end of 2018 is nigh. According to Bloomberg, the next lot of episodes will be hitting Netflix this December – perhaps in a similar move to Season 4, which dropped in full on 29 December last year.
There’s another intriguing tidbit from the report, which claims that one of the episodes will use the interactive possibilities of Netflix to fascinating effect – a choose-your-own-adventure episode, where viewers will be able to make choices on behalf of the characters in the story. Prepare to feel not just hollow and gut-punched at the end of that episode, as usual with Black Mirror, but complicit in the likely disturbing outcomes of your actions. You monster, you. Considering Brooker is such a fan of video games, the prospect of him writing an interactive piece of fiction is a tantalising one.
The new series of Black Mirror is expected to bring six fresh episodes to the series, taking the overall episode count up to 25. It will mark Netflix’s third run of the show, having picked up from Channel 4 at the end of Series 2. Stay tuned to your own black mirrors for more info in the coming months.
