Darren Aronofsky might have found a project to follow The Fountain. Paramount has acquired the rights to a novel called Black Flies.

Written by Shannon Burke, the book revolves around an emergency medical technician in Harlem, New York who is preparing to enter medical school. She experiences crises and stressful misadventures – it says here – including a mentor who has been numbed to the point that he makes a wrong decision in a life-threatening situation.

It’s based on real-life experience as Burke, who has yet to find a publisher for her book (not that that’s going to stop the movie), was herself an EMT in Harlem.

The film now needs a scriptwriter who will work with Aronofsky.
