Every year in America, the Independence Day weekend box office No 1 slot becomes one of the most hotly-contested in the Hollywood year. This year, it was clear from the start that there was only going to be one winner - Men in Black II. The Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones hit made a whopping $90 million this weekend, smashing its 1997 record over the same weekend of $84.1 million - but not doing quite well enough to knock the other Smith film Independence Day off its $96.1 million perch. Other winners this weekend included the Adam Sandler comedy Mr Deeds which took in $26.3 million and the basketball flick Like Mike which raked in $20.1 million.
