Despite his immense stature and rippling muscles, it turns out that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is not a real-life superhero. But, he is finally getting to play one in live action, in DC’s Black Adam – the first trailer for which has just dropped. Have a watch below.
This teaser gives us a glimpse of Black Adam’s backstory before hurtling straight into the action – you want The Rock punching a plane? You got it. You want him to throw a human man miles out into the depths of the ocean? You got it. You want him holding a rocket as it explodes? You got it.
We also get our first look at other heroes (and potentially villains) in the film, including Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman, Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell’s Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan on moustache-twirling form as Doctor Fate. There’s a bit of a tonal balance on display, with moments of levity and physical comedy contrasting with Black Adam’s commitment to being an antihero – when Hawkman confronts him with the phrase “heroes don’t kill people,” his response is “well, I do.” Black Adam is known as one of Shazam!’s main antagonists, and whilst this teaser doesn’t seem to position him as a full-blown villain, it certainly hints that the film may be leaning into his darker side.
Black Adam is in cinemas from 21 October 2022.
