When we first met Margot Robbie’s incarnation of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, she was in thrall to Jared Leto’s Joker – a clearly deeply unhealthy relationship between two true psychopaths. But as the full, lengthy title of the upcoming Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) suggests, this time she’s untethered from her former boyfriend after a break-up, instead finding cameraderie up with the likes of Black Canary, Renee Montoya, Huntress, and young Cassandra Cain.
“She’s trying to own it,” Margot Robbie tells Empire of Quinn’s break-up in the upcoming No Time To Die issue. “That felt like a real way to deal with a break-up. It’s not clean and easy to be a strong woman. It’s so hard. She’s a bit more Courtney Love than Debbie Harry this time. She says, ‘I’m single, I don’t need him, fuck that guy.’ But if the Joker were to text her, ‘You up?’ she’d run. She’d fall to pieces.”
