He's been largely away from TV (aside from the excellent US mockumentary series Documentary Now! and his contributions to South Park), but Bill Hader is headed back to the small screen for a new HBO series called Barry.

Co-written and produced by Hader and Silicon Valley veteran Alec Berg, the potential half-hour comedy series will see Hader as a former Marine who now makes his living as a slightly scruffy hitman in the Midwest.

Sick of the assassin's life, he finds some solace and a potential change when he accepts an assignment to off someone in Los Angeles and there dives into the world of the amateur LA theatre scene. In addition to producing, writing and starring, Hader intends to direct the pilot in the hopes that the cable channel will pick up the show to series.

Film-wise, Hader will be heard in The Angry Birds Movie, flapping in on May 13, and he's also provided a performance for one of the giants in Steven Spielberg's The BFG, which arrives here on July 22.
