Between Pam & Tommy and now this, it's becoming something of a trend for stories about '90s icons whose lives were impacted by the darker sides of fame. We'd expect Hurricana, which follows the tragic true story of Anna Nicole Smith to tread a little more carefully than the Hulu/Star series. The first pieces of casting are in progress, with Betty Gilpin to play Smith and Holly Hunter in talks to be her therapist.
Smith first gained popularity in Playboy magazine and went on to model for Guess, H&M, Heatherette among others, while also working in film and TV. In 1994, her highly publicized second marriage to 89-year-old billionaire J. Howard Marshall resulted in speculation that she married him for his money, which she denies. Following Marshall’s death in 1995, Smith began a lengthy legal battle over a share of his estate. She died in 2007 in a Hollywood, Florida, hotel room as a result of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. She was 39.
According to Deadline, the movie will chart how in an attempt to save Smith’s (Gilpin) life, her devoted therapist, Khristine (Hunter), embarks on a 36-hour odyssey in which she unknowingly delivers the fatal blow. The film will reportedly chart the "immense hurricane-like force that was Anna Nicole Smith, and the fateful string of events that led Anna to destroy everything in her path, including herself and those closest to her."
Killing Eve director Francesca Gregorini is behind the camera for this one, working from a script by Rebecca and Matt Sarnoff.
