Hundreds of eager fans gathered at the Empire Leicester Square last night for the charity premiere of In Her Shoes, the latest film from 8 Mile director Curtis Hanson starring Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz.
Diaz and Collette play estranged sisters, who at first seem to have only their shoe size in common. When mischievous Maggie (Diaz) falls out with long-suffering Rose (Colette) the discovery of a grandparent they thought dead brings them back together, and they learn more about themselves in the process.
After walking around in the cold for over an hour the stars were bundled upstairs for a stiff drink, but they soon nipped downstairs again to have a word with Empire: "When I first read the script I thought this is a story that doesn’t usually get told, it’s real connective tissue to the human soul and it’s something that we all need to go through at times when we really need to grow as human beings,” Diaz explained. “That’s something you don’t see all the time, especially written as well as it had been.
Toni Collette denied the film was a standard chick flick stating dryly: “Have you seen the movie? Still think it’s a romantic comedy? It’s one of the most beautiful scripts I’ve ever read. It’s very honest and true."
Director Curtis Hanson explained that the script got him to consider a departure from edgier fare: “This script made me laugh, made me cry, I identified with these characters even though I’m a man and I thought if I can convey that spirit, that emotion in the movie then it would be very special."
Alongside a stunning Collette, Diaz gave out some beauty advice for those wanting to be, er, in her shoes: “Our characters are very unsure of themselves. Rose’s character doesn’t really believe in her image, her outer shell, and my character puts too much importance on it, so in this journey they find out what their positive attributes are. I say go ahead, make sure who you are and be honest and truthful to yourself and you’ll always look stunning.”
