They've appeared together in two films recently - Collateral and Lions for Lambs - but actor-director Peter Berg is now in talks to direct Tom Cruise in spy thriller Edwin A. Salt, due to start shooting this summer (actors' strike permitting).
The story, written by screenwriter and sometime director Kurt Wimmer (he did write The Thomas Crown Affair remake, but let's not mention Ultraviolet, OK?), is about a CIA spy who's accused of being a Russian sleeper agent planning to assassinate the President. While trying to reunite with his family, he also has to find the real culprit.
Terry Hotel Rwanda George was originally slated to direct, but Berg has apparently been having talks with Cruise to take over. Given that he's currently a studio favourite after The Kingdom and with the upcoming Will Smith/superhero movie Hancock, it wouldn't be a huge surprise if he takes the reins. Shooting starts in June on soundstages in LA and on the US East Coast.
