After months of pre-production, Sam Mendes is ready to ship out and start shooting on World War I drama 1917. And he's stocked the cast with a huge assortment of people. Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Richard Madden, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Jamie Parker, Nabhaan Rizwan and Claire Duburcq are all aboard.

George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman are the leads for the film, which will see them as young soldiers on a single day at the height of the conflict. How the new arrivals will fit in remains to be seen, but at least some of them will be reporting for duty when the cameras start rolling next week.

And Mendes, who wrote the script with Penny Dreadful's Krysty Wilson-Cairns, has also assembled quite the team behind the camera too, including some repeat collaborators such as Roger Deakins, Dennis Gassner and composer Thomas Newman.

DreamWorks and Universal are behind this one, with a US release already scheduled for Christmas Day this year.
