Benedict Cumberbatch Linked To Star Wars: Episode VII

It’s been a little while since we’ve had to break out the ol’ Star Wars** Rumour Alert Klaxon{ =nofollow}, but it’s howling away at Empire Towers as yet another sketchy piece of proto-casting arrives for Episode VII. This time around, the subject is the not-very-surprising connection between the new SW film and one Benedict Cumberbatch.

According to a site called Film Chronicles, which cites no actual sources, Sherlock is said to be all but announced as playing… *something *in J.J. Abrams and writer Michael Arndt’s take on the space opera.

Naturally, there has been no official confirmation or release about anything, so this one lives strictly in Rumour-Space for now. But let’s be honest: it’s hardly the most surprising piece of speculation, given Cumberbatch’s appeal right now, his past working for Abrams on Star Trek Into Darkness and his seeming willingness to pop up in giant genre films (see the aforementioned Trek and his twin gigs on the Hobbit trilogy). There's also the fact he dropped out of Guillermo del Toro's haunted house drama Crimson Peak with no apparent schedule clash.

So while only those within Team Star Wars know for sure at the moment, Cumberbatch’s involvement remains in the Schrödinger's Cat department. Likewise Alex Pettyfer and Rachel Hurd-Wood, who have been mooted recently…

Say, though, that ol’ Cumbers were to be cast. Who would you have him play? Sneering Sith? Heroic Jedi? Son of Solo? We want your views…
