Tom Holland's Peter Parker may have lost one mentor in Tony Stark, and his more recent example, Nick Fury, turned out to be a Skrull impersonating the former SHIELD boss. But another candidate is stepping in to help the friendly neighbourhood web-crawler. Benedict Cumberbatch is appearing as Doctor Strange in the new, third live-action Spider-Man movie.
While the news has yet to be confirmed by Disney or Marvel, the information comes from The Hollywood Reporter. Plot details for the new Spidey outing are naturally under lock and key, but we already know that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his Electro role from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, while Cumberbatch's casting would indicate that the multiverse will certainly play a part this time around. Which goes someway to explaining why and how Foxx might show up, and also lends more credence to rumours that we could see at least cameos from Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire as Holland's predecessors in the Spider-suit.
Cumberbatch is expected to kick off shooting Strange sequel Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness soon in London, with Sam Raimi directing and a 25 March 2022 release on the books. The third Spider-film is also reportedly gearing up for production later in October under the director of the returning Jon Watts, but across the pond in Atlanta, so Cumberbatch could be travelling soon. Stay safe, BC!
