We have to admit that our eyebrows were raised when Ben Wheatley signed on to direct the Tomb Raider sequel last year. It represented the director stretching himself and the highest-profile project he'd boarded. While we're still waiting for that to actually shoot, he's now boarded something that feels both surprising and yet a little more in line with his sensibilities – The Meg 2.
Warner Bros. has Wheatley on to direct the follow-up to the 2018 giant shark thriller that saw Jason Statham going up against a massive, toothy beast. Despite some dodgy reviews, it earned more than $530 million worldwide.
Wheatley's latest, the adaptation of Rebecca, arrived on Netflix this past week and he's got several projects bubbling away in development, including a few films he's been trying to get made for years. Looks like they'll have to wait until he's finished these new big opportunities.
