Fresh from its UK premiere at the London Film Festival, George Clooney's latest directorial outing, The Tender Bar has put a first trailer online. See Ben Affleck dispense manly wisdom to his nephew (Daniel Ranieri, and then Tye Sheridan when he's older) in the footage.
Adapted by The Departed's William Monahan from the memoir of the same name by JR Moehringer, The Tender Bar tells the story of JR, a fatherless lad growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Affleck), is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures. As the boy’s determined mother (Lily Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her – and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father (Christopher Lloyd, in his second cranky grandpa role this year) – JR begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams, with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie’s bar.
The Tender Bar will be out initially on limited release in both the US and UK on 17 December, expanding wider Stateside on the 22nd. It'll then hit Amazon's Prime Video service on 17 January next year.
