Beauty Queen

Queen Latifah takes up the tongs

Having lost out to Chicago co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones at the Oscars, Queen Latifah has been given some small consolation, named proprietor of her own beauty salon. And no, before you get all excited and start looking for the actress on the Channel 4 reality show, this is a completely different establishment. Adhering to the Hollywood mantra that you really can't milk something too much - be it cow, joke or comedy franchise - MGM have commissioned Beauty Shop as a spin-off of sleeper hit ensemble comedy, Barbershop, which swept in from leftfield and cleaned up at last year's box office in the States. Destined to be situated next door to Ice Cube's house of hair-care, the Beauty Shop will take a similar vein but presumably with a more perms and pedicure slant than it's male-centric neighbour. Latifah will receive a cameo appearance in Barbershop 2 - being developed concurrently with the spin-off - to introduce her character, before bringing her own pampering parlour to the screen shortly after.
