As Hollywood sends remakes hurling at us like giant chunks of rock ripped from orbit, not all of them are aiming to be straight re-workings of the original film. Take the new Starship Troopers, which has just hired Baywatch writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon to work on the script.

This new take on Robert A. Heinlein's militaristic tale of humans battling giant bugs has been brewing since at least 2011, with prolific producer Neal H. Moritz and Sony's Columbia arm working up a film that had a first draft from Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz.

Now Swift and Shannon are charged with working on the pic, but have taken to their shared Twitter account to clarify that they're not looking to redo the satirical version that Paul Verhoeven brought us in 1997, but have their own take - and have been answering questions about the movie in the replies to the Tweet.

The original's fun, typically boisterous take and cult following will be hard to match, but we do want to know more. As for Baywatch, the comedy take in the 1990s show will be out on 12 May nest year.

Starship Troopers remake planned.
