It's a good day for geeks, with the news that one of the creative forces between the awesome modern series of Battlestar Galactica, Ronald D. Moore, has signed a deal with United Artists to create a sci-fi trilogy for the big screen.

It's not the first time that Moore has worked for the cinema screen rather than TV - he also worked on the two good Next Generation movies, Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek: First Contact after serving long years as a writer on the show, and he worked with Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner on Mission: Impossible II, which goes some way to explaining why he's signed to United Artists, which is now run by the pair.

There are no details on the plot so far, or whether it will be based on a 60s/70s TV show but given a much better modern twist. But we're hoping it has something to do with a big old spaceship on the run from a race of robots who want to wipe out humanity, only the robots sometimes act more like people than people. Wait, what? That's been done already? Aw nuts. OK then, let's see if he can come up with something original, and let's hope that this keeps Battlestar fans' heads from exploding when the fourth season finishes.
