Another twist in the tale of the year’s most fascinating, polarising stories, Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, has emerged during a BBC interview with Hans Zimmer. The great German composer revealed that Zack Snyder’s blockbuster will be his last superhero score. He is, for want of a better phrase, dawn with it.

"I did Batman Begins with Chris [Nolan] 12 years ago, so The Dark Knight Trilogy might be three movies to you, to me it was 11 years of my life," he told BBC Hardtalk. Those three movies – much more layered and complex pieces of composition than the "BRAAAM!” - were followed swiftly by Man Of Steel and now Snyder’s second DC monster.

The process has clearly left him drained. "This one was very hard for me to do, to try to find new language," he explained.

It’s hard to imagine DC superhero movies without Zimmer’s epic soundscapes. That said, there’s plenty of up-and-comers to step into his shoes, not least his own protégé Henry Jackman (currently on Captain America: Civil War).

Zimmer’s next projects are Nolan’s Dunkirk and Ron Howard’s Inferno. Not a superhero in sight there (unless you count Robert Langdon).
