Director Matt Reeves might have had to hit the pause button on making The Batman because of the current pandemic, but not only is he set to start cranking the movie cameras again, but he's also developing a spin-off TV series set in the same Bat-universe to screen on new streaming service HBO Max.
Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter is on to oversee the series, which will delve into the murkier corners of Gotham, likely just before Robert Pattinson's Batman arrives to start tackling crime in his inimitable fashion. Which means, as Variety's Justin Kroll has heard, it'll be set before The Batman.
"But Empire," we can hear you saying, "isn't that just the TV series Gotham?" This will, apparently, not be quite the same concept. While it'll share the idea of police corruption in Bruce Wayne's home city, Gotham soon pivoted more towards Bat-villains and besides... Winter also worked on The Sopranos before he brought Boardwalk Empire to life, so this will be on a whole other level," Reeves says in a statement. "This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream."
The Batman is currently scheduled to arrive in the UK on 1 October, 2021. As for the show... that's anyone's guess at this point, though the idea situation would be to have it ready for the movie's release or just after.
