A brief scan of the high concept (man loses testicles after the father of his latest attempted conquest hits them with a trumpet) might lead you to think that it’s nothing more than a bawdy romp. But Munday seems to have a deeper agenda than a simple body humour comedy.
Patrick Wilson stars as the title character, a suburban womanizer whose high opinion of himself is fuelled by the fact that he is fairly successful with the ladies. But when he has that fateful encounter with the musical instrument, he’s suddenly cut off from two very precious possessions. And his troubles don’t stop there: he’s then sued for paternity by Ginger Farley (Judy Greer), a woman he can’t even remember having sex with, and when he meets her, can’t imagine why he did.
But given his current situation, this is likely his only real chance to be a dad, so he decides to embrace the idea and shoulder his fatherly duties, meeting Ginger’s parents (Cybill Shepherd and Malcolm McDowell) and her sister, the predatory Jennifer (Chloe Sevigny).
Along the way, Barry learns that maybe his life could be just a little bit richer, and he starts to live up to his responsibilities. Yes, the hugging/learning aspect did worry us a little, but the likeable comic flow of the trailer and the sheer volume of familiar faces on display (Mae Whitman! Jean Smart! Billy Dee Williams! Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass!) makes us want to check this one out regardless.
You can watch the trailer over at Apple. So far, the movie only has a release date set across the pond – it’ll debut on demand on August 27 and hit cinemas on October 1. Fingers crossed it makes it over here soon after that.
