If you've been frustrated by some of the choices and surprise omissions of this year's Oscars, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, held as usual the day before, were here to bring a little balance to awards season. The big winner of the event was If Beale Street Could Talk, which scored three trophies including Best Feature.

Director Barry Jenkins, who didn't get into the category at the Academy Awards, won at the Indie Spirits along with Regina King, who has been consistently taking supporting actress awards.

Richard E. Grant won a welcome award for his work in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and Ethan Hawke, shut out of the Academy Awards, got the male lead trophy. Sorry To Bother You was named Best First Feature for director Boots Riley, while Roma earned Best International Film. See the full list of winners below.
