British films swept the American competition aside last night at the BAFTA awards. Despite being nominated for ten awards, James Cameron's multi-Oscar winning Titanic failed to pick up a single BAFTA, while LA Confidential, which received 12 nominations, picked up just two - for Best Editing and Best Sound. The Full Monty was the night's biggest winner, picking up four awards - for Best Film, Best Actor (Robert Carlyle), Best Supporting Actor (Tom Wilkinson) and the audience award for best film. Dame Judi Dench won the award for Best Actress, for her performance as Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown. The Best British Film award went to Gary Oldman's hard-hitting, semi-autobiographical directorial debut, Nil By Mouth. Oldman also received the award for Best Original Screenplay, while Sean Connery picked up a special Fellowship award.
