Awards season is in full swing, and Britain’s big ceremony, the BAFTAs, took place tonight at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The nominations were a diverse bunch, and the winners are too. Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Dune won the most awards, taking five gongs all from technical categories – Best Original Score, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound and Special Visual Effects. The next highest scorers all won two awards apiece – The Power Of The Dog took two biggies, Best Film and Director for Jane Campion, only the third woman to do so; West Side Story took Casting, and Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Anita; and Apple TV+’s CODA won Best Adapted Screenplay for writer/director Siân Heder and Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur, notably the first Deaf winner at the BAFTA film awards.
Other headlines include Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast taking Outstanding British Film, Jeymes Samuel winning Outstanding Debut for his Western-reinventing The Harder They Fall, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car took Best Film Not In The English Language, and Paul Thomas Anderson won the Best Original Screenplay award for Licorice Pizza. Best Lead Actor and Actress went to Will Smith (for King Richard) and Joanna Scanlan (for Aleem Khan’s After Love) respectively – those two, along with other performance victors Kotsur and DeBose, all first time BAFTA winners. The EE Rising Star award, as voted for the public, went to new 007 Lashana Lynch, with No Time To Die only winning one award – Best Editing.
The ceremony itself was hosted by Rebel Wilson, and musical performances included Dame Shirley Bassey singing ‘Diamonds Are Forever’, to celebrate 60 years of James Bond, and a lovely rendition of ‘Both Sides Now’ by CODA’s Emilia Jones.
