For much of this year’s awards conversation, The Banshees Of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once have dominated in the major categories – but at the 2023 BAFTAs, it was All Quiet On The Western Front that cleaned up. Edward Berger’s film bagged seven awards on the night including Best Film – building up momentum throughout the show as it won multiple technical categories (Cinematography, Score, Sound) and major gongs (Director, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language) over the course of the ceremony.

“For a German-language film, we’ve been blessed with so many nominations, and winning this is just incredible,” said producer Malte Grunert on stage while picking up Best Film. The film’s big wins also came freighted with the relevancy of its World War I story. Upon winning Adapted Screenplay, writer-director Berger noted that in five days time it will be a year since war began in Ukraine, and stated that: “There are no heroes in any war.”

While Banshees missed out on Director and Best Film, it still picked up four trophies on the night – including Outstanding British Film (“I know that every Irish person in the cast and crew is saying, ‘Best what award?’,” joked writer-director Martin McDonagh), Original Screenplay, plus Supporting Actor for Barry Keoghan and Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon. Also bagging four awards was Elvis, predominantly in technical categories (Costume Design, Make Up & Hair, Casting), but also earning Leading Actor for Austin Butler – who beat out the likes of Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, and Paul Mescal in a crowded selection.

Notably, then, it left Everything Everywhere with just one win on the night, for Editing. Aftersun picked up Outstanding Debut for its director Charlotte Wells, Cate Blanchett won Leading Actress for TÁR (getting in ahead of the likes of Michelle Yeoh and Viola Davis), Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio came away with Animated Film, and Navalny came through in the Documentary category. Plus, Avatar: The Way Of Water won Visual Effects because… well, have you seen it?

All that, and Babylon nabbed Production Design, Sex Education star Emma Mackey came out on top in the public-voted EE Rising Star award, An Irish Goodbye won British Short Film, and The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse got Animated Short. Oh, and Alison Hammond asked Ariana DeBose the immortal question: “Is there any end to your talent, babes?” All in all, a successful evening then.
