In the wake of the Golden Globes, BAFTA has announced its nominees for the 2020 Film ceremony taking us into the next phase of awards season. After 1917’s big wins at the Globes on Sunday (including Best Picture and Best Director for Sam Mendes), the one-shot(ish) World War I movie received nine nominations from BAFTA – including Best Film, Director, and Outstanding British Film – but doesn’t lead the pack overall.
The film with the most nominations is Joker, with a total of 11 nods. As well as Best Film and Director, it’s up for Best Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, Editing, Cinematography, and the new Casting award among others – and, of course, Joaquin Phoenix is nominated for Best Actor. Hot on its heels are The Irishman with 10 nominations – including Best Film, Director, and Supporting Actor nods for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, but still nothing for Robert De Niro – and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, also with 10 nominations. Quentin Tarantino himself is up for Director and Original Screenplay, while the movie is recognised in Best Film, Editing, Production Design and more – plus acting nominations for Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie.
Speaking of Robbie, she’ll be competing against herself in the Supporting Actress category – as well as her turn as Sharon Tate in Hollywood, she’s also been nominated for Bombshell. Competing alongside her for Supporting Actress is Scarlett Johansson in Jojo Rabbit (Taika Waititi’s film receiving six nominations in total), who also finds herself in the Leading Actress running for Marriage Story.
The biggest controversy with this year's set of nominees looks to be a lack of diversity, particularly in the acting categories which consist entirely of white performers – despite prominent acclaimed roles starring people of colour in the likes of The Farewell, Hustlers, The Personal History Of David Copperfield, and Us. And as with the Golden Globes, it’s another set of all-male directors this year – an admittedly impressive list including Scorsese, Tarantino, Bong Joon-Ho, Sam Mendes and Todd Phillips, but leaving the likes of Greta Gerwig, Lulu Wang, Joanna Hogg, and Marielle Heller out of the running. Gerwig’s Little Women received five nominations – with recognition for Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh’s performances – but missed out on Best Film, while Heller’s A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood is nominated only for Tom Hanks’ supporting performance.
There are some treats in there – Booksmart and Knives Out received Original Screenplay nominations, Farmageddon: A Shaun The Sheep Movie rubs shoulders with the Disney behemoths in Animated Film, and Jessie Buckley is up for Leading Actress for Wild Rose. Plus, Rocketman fared well with four nods overall, including Outstanding British Film and Taron Egerton for Leading Actor, as did twisty Korean thriller Parasite – which also received four nominations, recognised both in Film Not In The English Language and Best Film. It’s a good haul too for Syrian war documentary For Sama, up for Documentary, Outstanding British Film, Film Not In The English Language, and Outstanding British Debut.
