After three weeks at the top of the box office charts in America, Gravity has finally been pulled from its throne by, of all people, Johnny Knoxville. Riding good and faintly surprised reviews, Knoxville’s new Jackass production, Bad Grandpa, smashed into the top slot like a fake old geezer on a runaway shopping cart going headlong through a window. The new comedy took in $32 million.
Alfonso Cuaron and Team Gravity will still be satisfied, however, as the space thriller only slipped to second place and added $20 million to a US domestic total now scratching $200 million. Captain Phillips was pushed to third, bringing in $11 million, while Ridley Scott’s latest, the Cormac McCarthy-scripted crime drama The Counsellor, could only manage a disappointing fourth place launch and $8 million. **Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 **hung around in fifth place, adding $6.1 million and crossing the $100 million mark in the States.
Carrie was down from third to sixth place, taking in $5.9 million, while Escape Plan made off with $4.3 million in seventh. Eighth place went to 12 Years A Slave, which did the indie movie leap of opening on more screens and entering the top 10. The acclaimed drama earned $2.1 million, ahead of Enough Said in ninth ($1.5 million) and Prisoners at 10th with $1 million.
