Those heroic Avengers continued to reign at the US box office this weekend, easily seeing off fresh competition from Battleship and The Dictator. Tony Stark and friends made $55 million across the three days in the States, and has earned more than $1.18 billion in revenue around the world so far.

Peter Berg’s attempt to turn the board game into an action film has already done decent business overseas, but American audiences didn’t seem quite as ready to embrace it, despite the gung-ho Navy vs. aliens plot. The film sailed into second place with $25.3 million. Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest comedy took third, earning $17.4 million for the weekend and $24.4 million total following a midweek launch. Dark Shadows slumped to fourth place, earning $12.7 million. And What To Expect When You’re Expecting seemed to indicate that cinemagoers might just be over the ensemble rom-com based on self-help books or secular holidays. It brought home $10.5 million for a fifth place start.

**The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel **continues to do well, jumping up from eighth to sixth place, with $3.2 million and $8.2 million so far. The Hunger Games fell to seventh, making $3 million, while Think Like A Man slipped to eighth and $2.7 million. The Lucky One was ninth, earning $1.7 million and rounding out the top 10 was The Pirates! Band Of Misfits (aka In An Adventure With Scientists!) with $1.4 million.
