Avengers: Endgame

Given the feverish business around Avengers: Infinity War and the anticipation for the next big crossover instalment of the MCU, it was less a case of whether Avengers: Endgame was going to crush the Stateside box office and beyond, but by how much. And the answer to that? A lot. A heck of a lot. Across the weekend in the US, Endgame took in a record-smashing $350 million.

And that was just the tip of the cashberg in terms of earnings. Worldwide, the movie took in $1.2 billion across its first five days, joining the billion dollar club in the shortest amount of time yet, and breaking other records for one-day totals, launches around the world and pushing the US box office a welcome weekend record at a time when earnings have been down.

Predictions for where it could go are mixed, but it's expected to end up in the rarified air held by the likes of Avatar and Titanic, easily on target to hit more than $2 billion.

And in terms of the other MCU movie still in the charts – Captain Marvel – the new arrival actually helped, as moviegoers checked out the solo adventure before seeing Brie Larson's hero work alongside her comicbook stablemates, with the result that the film jumped from fourth back to second, earning $8 million in its eighth weekend of release. Captain Marvel has now made $413.5 million in the US. Last week's top film, horror pic The Curse Of La Llorona fell to third, adding $7.5 million, while Breakthrough was fourth on $6.3 million. Shazam! felt the impact of the huge new superhero release more negatively than Captain Marvel, falling to fifth and $5.5 million.

Little slipped to sixth, making $3.4 million, while Dumbo was down to seventh on $3.2 million. At eighth, we find Pet Sematary digging up $1.2 million, with Us down to ninth and $1.1 million and Disneynature's Penguins wrapping up the top 10 on $1 million.
